Balenciaga S/S 13 Floating ruffles

Text & Illustration: Noelia Terrón-Laya

Balenciaga next Spring/Summer will be all about folds and ruffles. There is
hardly a conventional line: it is either architectonic straight-cut profiles,
asymmetric skirts pleated with pointed edges that fall towards the floor,
or bicolor ruffles in black and white that give a playful structure to legs.

Tweed and tailored suits combine with 60s skirts to create the signature 21st
century take on shapes and cuts. The shoes also exemplify this combination:
Oxford-style but with amazing bold geometric heels.

And accessories tell the rest of the tale: apart from vanity case-shaped bags
(perfect size to fit most of your every day indispensables), the jewelry has a
classic-side to it: Roman-inspired golden rings -one for each finger, obviously
to wear all together-, and a golden headpiece that adds the mythological edge
to the whole.

Prada S/S 13. Turning Japanesse !

Text & Illustration: Noelia Terrón-Laya

With every season, we want to become different people. Each designer,
when inspired, proposes us the ultimate magic: a licence to look
(and behave) how they imagined women for that particular season.

With the new Prada collection, we will be turning Japanese, as in the
famous 80s song from The Vapors. More precisely, we will be somewhere
between the 60s (think Courrèges) and Japan, with cherry blossom-inspired
prints and revisiting traditional kimono silken folds.

The result is cartoonish at times, especially when combined with leather
sock boots, almost Hello kitty-nesque with oversized flower decorated glasses,
and powerful when accompanied by huge geisha-style embellished platform
shoes. In short, this is the perfect equilibrium between the toughness of
folded shapes and bold colours and the softness of flower motifs and the use
of blush pink or ribbon details.

This woman is a real-life cartoon character, be it in Tokyo… or Milan.

Marc Jacobs S/S 13. Stripes!

Text & Illustration: Noelia Terrón-Laya

Marc Jacobs has done it again: the most pop of all designers has gone… well, pop.
His latest collection goes back to the 60s, and it feels like a cross between Swinging
London with mod classics such as monocrome stripes, low skirts and maxi dresses, and
the NY Factory spirit of The Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol. It feels as if Twiggy
and Edie Sedgwick had decided to update their style for the 21st century, for a new
remake of ‘Qui êtes vous, Polly Magoo?’.

The most surprising of all is that it is, at the same time, bold and minimalist. Simple,
but with pieces that would never go unnoticed. And, when it feels like an Escher drawing
or Op Art prints, then comes a Mickey Mouse top or animal-prints to balance the energy
and remind us that this is Marc Jacobs revisiting the 1960s from his very unique and
personal point of view and that, therefore, the next season we will crave for these looks.

▲ Back to School… Back to Cool! ▲

Text & Illustration: Noelia Terrón-Laya

Here it is again, what the French call “La Rentrée”, or getting back to
our routines after the summer break. This means the time has come to
go back to school (or to the office), but it is also the return of the
new: new books, films, music, and new trends are already waiting for
us now that September is here.

You will probably still have the glow of your beachy tan, which will help
start a “holiday” conversation on your first day back at the office. And,
even if you are already missing the sun and the laziness, there is also a
good side to it: now you can wear the Chanel mini backpack that got us
crazy since we saw it at the shows last February. But don’t expect to fill
it with tons of books like you used to do with your highschool Eastpack.
This one is literally mini: there’s only room for your notebook, a pen, your
phone, keys, a lipstick… and not much more.

Mix it with a slightly oversized mini skirt and a Basketball-inspired jacket
to add a preppy-Ivy League touch. Are you already nostalgic of your summer
friends: denim cutoff shorts, crazy bold sunglasses or slogan T-shirts? Don’t
worry, you can still wear your ET or Goonies T-shirts (now with a leather
perfecto on top), or stick to your colourful manicure.

All you need to start the new season can fit in this mini backpack or combines
perfectly with it.

×Jeremy Scott. Cactus Style!×

If a young American farmer girl were to dress cheeky NY style, a
name would automatically come to mind: Jeremy Scott. His latest
collection takes us to Texas, to a sort of post-modern Western in
which saloons have been replaced by clubs. And in
this film set,
denim is very much present, but also vinyl, transparent PVC and
playful colour combinations. Scott’s outfits are as much about what is
there than about what is missing: they show more (and more creatively)
than they hide.

And, in this collection, there is an element that had to be there: cactus.
Because they are probably the funniest plant ever, and they immediately
evoke images of the desert, they take us to an arid and dusty landscape
under a scorching sun. What happens there depends on us, but remember:
Don’t mess up with Texas!!

▲ Vika Gazinskaya. Crayola Dream ▲

Sometimes you see a drawing and wish it could come to life. And sometimes
you see objects that seem like a living sketch. This is the wonder of Vika
Gazinskaya’s latest collection: garments that seem to have jumped out of a
sketchbook. What for some other designer would seem like a mere sketch or
unfinished print, for Gazinskaya is the mere essence of what she wants to
transmit.

Moreover, the shapes of her pieces are quite futuristic, with oversized
patterns and trompes l’oeil, and a certain 50s feeling in the cut but with
a modern and energic twist.

These prints, that look as if a kid had been using his crayolas in a big
colouring book, are far from being simplistic. They are fresh, and bold,
and daring. So if you don’t feel like taking your Caran D’Ache out and
painting your dream ou
tfits for this season, don’t worry, Vika Gazinskaya
has done it already for you.
